Curtia and I connected with one another just a few days before her session in a private Facebook group for Munaluchi Bridal Coterie Members. She was heading to Miami, FL that weekend for a speaking engagement and wanted to get some updated headshots taken. After our first few messages, I could already tell that Curtia was a sweetheart. But meeting this sweet Southern Belle in person was all the proof that I needed! I can relate to Curtia because we are both employed full-time while running our businesses on the side. Anyone that is able to successfully handle both – and handle the responsibilities of being a wife and mom, on top of all of that – is an inspiration to me, and Curtia is doing this so well!
YOUR NAME AND PROFESSION
Curtia Moon, Wedding Planner and Online Boutique Owner
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO.
I am a 35-year old Alabama native, wife, and mother to three children. I currently work a full-time job, and I am the owner of MXK Events, a wedding and event planning and production company. In addition, I am the owner of Ladybosspreneur, an online boutique that has expanded into a women’s empowerment and lifestyle brand with a signature event called, A Seat at the Table. I am also a speaker, and soon-to-be author. (Fingers crossed!!!)
WHAT PUSHED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I love to serve people and I love nice experiences.
Generally, people in my area aren’t exposed to certain levels of experiences and services. So I wanted to merge all of that into a business. I’ve always been the go-to friend to help with wedding planning and designing, so starting a wedding planning business was natural for me. My event, A Seat at the Table, and the Ladybossprenuer brand came about from a lot of women asking questions about business, as well as my daughter wanting to own her own boutique. I would rather fall than have her fall, so I wanted to try managing a boutique before allowing her to make too many mistakes.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE JUGGLING A FULL-TIME JOB, WEDDING PLANNING BUSINESS, AND ONLINE BOUTIQUE?
I honestly have a great support system. While it is easier now that my children are older, my family has played a big part in assisting with them so I can go chase my dreams.
WHAT (OR WHO) INSPIRES YOU? ON DAYS WHEN THINGS SEEM TOO STRESSFUL, WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED?
My kids inspire me. My wedding planning company, MXK Events, is named after them – it’s the first initial of each child’s name: Mon’Tia, Xavier, Kaziyah. They are the legacy so they keep me going.
Waking up every day is motivation for me. There are so many people that don’t. I’m just thankful that I do and that I have health, strength, and a sound mind. Whether I want to or not, I do SOMETHING for my businesses every single day because just as easily that I can, it can all go away, so I am grateful and thankful.
WHAT IMPORTANT IS FEMALE ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO YOU?
It’s very important. One of the reasons I created A Seat at the Table is because when I first started in business, no one really close to me wanted to hear about my business woes. Some would listen but they didn’t truly understand where I was coming from, and that it wasn’t a complaining spirit – it was “How can I do this, do it well, and fix issues that I don’t really have the background in?” Hopefully, this intimate dinner party experience will give ladies a chance to connect with other ladies that have the same issues. What is said at the Table, stays at the Table!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START A BUSINESS OF THEIR OWN?
Find your passion and your purpose. When you can figure that out, the best opportunities will present themselves.
THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2018 HAS JUST COME TO A CLOSE. WHAT IS ONE THING YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO ACCOMPLISHING THIS YEAR?
Graduating College – I finished classes in December and I walk in May.
BONUS QUESTION(S): WHAT IS ONE THING YOU CANNOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT? AND ONE THING YOU CANNOT RUN YOUR BUSINESS WITHOUT?
I can’t leave home without earrings – they are literally everywhere! And I can’t run my business without my cell phone.
WHERE CAN OUR READERS FIND YOU?
THANKS SO MUCH, CURTIA!
